The Tarawera Ultramarathon 2017 a 102km, 87km, 62km run from Rotorua to Kawerau, attracting athletes from all over the world it is also part of the Ultra Trail World Tour.
This is a brief photo essay of my experience shooting this amazing event and some of my favourite images.
PRE RACE BBQ:
One of the first pre race events is the elite athlete BBQ, a chance for the athletes to catch up with each other, the race directors and to meet the media that will be following them throughout the race.
Held at Rainbow Springs Wildlife Park, they also get an introduction to NZ's wildlife and to experience a bit of kiwi hospitality.
Scenic boat cruise:
This is a Great way for people to see some remote parts of the course, to explore some of the lake and the beautiful scenery, the weather was fantastic!.
powhiri (welcome):
A traditional Maori welcome to the competitors:
Race day:
The day that all the hard work has been leading to. The emotions on the startline are raw and there is a sense of suspense in the air as everyone makes their final preparations for their epic battle with mind, bodies and the course.
